Permanent Alimony

The purpose of alimony is to help the less financially advantaged spouse transition into their new life apart from married life. Permanent alimony is alimony given for the rest of the awarded party’s life. Permanent alimony is an uncommon type of spousal support and is typically awarded in the cases of divorce where the marriage was longer in length or the spouses are much older in age.

Generally speaking a “long” marriage is more than ten years, although marriages shorter in length could be eligible for permanent alimony as well. The judge will probably award some form of lengthened alimony for a stay-at-home mother who cared for her children rather than pursue a career. A sick spouse that is unable to work will also most likely be awarded some form of alimony for a significant length of time, perhaps even until death.
